Whether you need a 4x4 for mountain roads or a hatchback for city runs, here's what each category is good for and what it costs.
The right choice if your route includes Gurez Valley, Razdan Pass, Bangus, or any road that turns to gravel. The Thar ATM starts at ₹5,999/day, Thar Roxx at ₹7,999/day, Scorpio N at ₹7,499/day, and Jimny at ₹5,999/day. All are JK-registered, fully insured, and cleared for Kashmir mountain routes.
For those who want comfort and presence on the road. MG Hector starts at ₹6,999/day, Toyota Fortuner at ₹15,999/day, Audi Q3 at ₹11,999/day, and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon at ₹24,999/day. The Rubicon doubles as a serious off-road machine if you want luxury and capability in one.
The most popular category for families and small groups. Handles Kashmir highways well, fits into most parking spots, and gives you enough boot space for a week's luggage. Creta, Kia Seltos, and MG Astor all start at ₹4,999/day.
The most affordable self-drive options in Srinagar. Alto starts at ₹2,499/day, Swift, i20, and Ignis at ₹3,499/day. Good for city travel, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam runs. Not recommended for Gurez, Sonamarg, or high-altitude mountain routes.

You need a valid Indian driving licence, a photo ID such as Aadhaar or passport, and one address proof. Foreign visitors can drive on an International Driving Permit along with their passport.
The minimum age is 21 years and you must have held the licence for at least two years. For luxury cars the minimum age is 25 years.
The security deposit is ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 depending on the car and is refunded once the car comes back in the same condition. Basic third party insurance is included in every rental. Comprehensive cover is available at extra cost.
Every car in the fleet is JK registered, so there is no separate paperwork for driving within Jammu and Kashmir. Tell us at booking if your route leaves the valley, since a few high altitude and border areas need prior permission.
All four are comfortable day drives from Srinagar on tarred roads, between 40 km and 90 km one way. A hatchback handles Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri. Sonamarg is easier in an SUV.
Gulmarg is about 50 km and takes 1 hour 30 minutes through Tangmarg. The last 12 km climb is steep and gets slushy after rain or snow.
Pahalgam is about 90 km and takes 2 hours 30 minutes through Anantnag. Wide highway most of the way. Local taxi unions run the Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari legs, so you park your car in Pahalgam for those.
Sonamarg is about 80 km and takes 2 hours 30 minutes on the Srinagar Leh highway. Convoy traffic and roadworks near Gagangir slow things down, so start early. Ground clearance helps here.
Doodhpathri is about 42 km and takes 1 hour 30 minutes through Khansahib. The quietest of the four and the easiest drive. A budget car is enough.
Gurez is about 125 km from Srinagar and takes 5 to 6 hours over Razdan Pass at 3,300 m. Take a 4x4 or a high clearance SUV. Budget hatchbacks are not allowed on this route.
The Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio N and Jimny are all cleared for Gurez. The Jimny is the easiest car for the narrow sections past Razdan.
Gurez is close to the Line of Control, so carry your original ID. Registration at the army check post on the way is routine and usually quick.
Fill the tank in Bandipora. There is a long stretch with no reliable fuel after that. Mobile signal drops past Razdan Pass, so download offline maps in Srinagar and tell someone your plan before you leave.
The road is normally open from around May to October and closes with heavy snow. Check the current status with us before you book the car.
Gurez Valley travel guide Gurez Valley group trip
Snow driving season runs from December to early March. In those months we put customers on SUVs for anything beyond Srinagar city, and we do not release budget hatchbacks for Gulmarg or Sonamarg.
The Tangmarg to Gulmarg climb is the section that catches people out. After fresh snow the police often stop cars without chains at Tangmarg, and you finish the last stretch in a local vehicle.
The Srinagar Leh highway beyond Sonamarg stays shut through winter. The Srinagar Jammu highway can close for a day at a time after heavy snow or landslides.
Start late morning in winter. Roads are cleared by then and the ice from the night has melted off the shaded sections. Aim to be back before dark, since black ice after sunset is the real hazard, not the snowfall.
Fuel, tolls and parking are on you. The car comes with a full tank and must be returned full, so plan a top up before you drop it back.
Srinagar has plenty of pumps and ATMs. Bandipora, Tangmarg, Anantnag and Ganderbal have both. Past those towns, treat fuel and cash as unavailable and fill up before you climb.
Paid parking is standard at Gulmarg gondola, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, usually a small daily charge collected on the spot in cash.
Keep cash for parking, small shops and check post stops. Card acceptance is patchy outside Srinagar and mobile networks drop on the mountain routes, so UPI is not something to depend on.
Self drive works out cheaper and more flexible for trips of three days or more, once you are comfortable on hill roads. A cab with a driver is the better choice for a single sightseeing day, for winter first timers and for anyone who does not want to negotiate at check posts.
With self drive you pay the daily rate plus fuel, and you keep the car overnight. You stop where you want, leave at 5 am for sunrise, and change plans mid day without renegotiating anything.
With a cab you pay per route and the driver handles parking, local unions and road conditions. Where local taxi unions control the last leg, like Aru and Chandanwari in Pahalgam, you pay them separately either way.
Our honest take: take the cab if this is your first Kashmir visit in January and you have never driven in snow. Take the car for anything longer, and especially for Gurez, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg, where public transport is thin and taxis charge a premium for the day.
