Sonmarg in winter is not the green meadow from the summer photos. The valley goes white, the crowds thin out, and the drive up the Sindh valley from Srinagar becomes half the experience. It is also the Kashmir day trip most likely to change on the morning you leave. Here is the honest version from people who plan this day every winter: getting to Sonmarg town and getting to Thajiwas Glacier are two separate questions. A road being open answers the first one only. This guide covers both, plus the things to do in Sonmarg that are actually worth your time when the snow is in.
Treat this table as a planning guide, not a live status board. Each item needs its own check for your dates.
| Place or service | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Sonmarg town and the road from Srinagar | Much better winter access since the Z-Morh tunnel opened. Check the J&K Traffic Police advisory the morning you travel. |
| Thajiwas Glacier excursion | Reopened in February 2026. Winter trail conditions, the permitted turnaround point and which services are running still need same-day confirmation. |
| Zoji La and Zero Point | Don't count on either in winter. Traffic beyond Sonmarg runs on weather, snow clearance, chain rules and fixed timings. |
| Hotels and restaurants | Book only after confirming for your exact dates. A hotel website listing a restaurant is not proof it is serving in January. |
| Snow sports and events | Sonmarg hosted a snow sports festival and the National Snowshoe Championship in February 2026. Neither means there are daily activities or that dates will repeat. |
Thajiwas Glacier is Sonmarg's best-known excursion. The Ganderbal district administration itself describes the pony trip up to Thajiwas as a summer attraction. Don't copy that summer plan straight into a January itinerary.
In winter, ask exactly where the permitted visit ends. It might be a lower snow area, a viewpoint, or the usual summer endpoint. A ride sold as "Thajiwas Glacier" doesn't automatically mean you will reach or walk on glacier ice.
The February 2026 reopening matters because a lot of older articles still describe Thajiwas as closed for security reasons. But the reopening didn't create an all-winter walking route or a guaranteed daily pony service.
Ask for the exact endpoint. Get the pony or sledge operator to describe the route and where you turn back. "Glacier sightseeing" on its own is too vague to pay for.
Check permissions before the price. A guide being willing to take you is not the same as the route being permitted. Confirm with the local tourism office or police post first.
Agree the full price upfront. Is the quote per person, per pony or per sledge? Does it include the return, waiting time and an attendant? What happens to your money if the route closes halfway?
Be ready to skip it. Don't go past a barricade or onto an unapproved snow slope because someone else did. Thajiwas is a bonus on a winter day, not the whole reason to go.
Build your day around things you can shorten or cancel easily. A good winter day in Sonmarg doesn't need every summer sightseeing stop.
Play in the snow in approved areas. Ask where visitors are allowed to walk that day. Keep kids close and pick a spot away from traffic, steep slopes and the riverbank.
Photograph the Sindh valley. The Sindh river runs through the whole valley, with the mountains closing in on both sides. Pick one safe viewpoint and spend time there instead of stopping at every roadside pull-off. Never park in a snow-clearance vehicle's way for a photo.
Try a short sledge ride, if it's running. Treat it as an optional extra, never something you prepay. Look at the slope first, agree the route and price, and say no if there is no safe stopping area at the bottom.
Take a long, warm lunch. A confirmed indoor meal is worth more than chasing one more far-off viewpoint, especially with children or older parents.
Check for winter events. The February 2026 snow festival had football, kabaddi, tug-of-war and cricket on snow, and Sonmarg also hosted the National Snowshoe Championship that month. If an event interests you, ask about this season's dates. Don't assume last year's schedule repeats.
The best local tip for Sonmarg in winter isn't a secret spot. It's asking what is safely open today and spending your time there, instead of paying to chase an endpoint nobody can promise.
The Ganderbal district administration puts Sonmarg about 87 km from Srinagar, under three hours by road in normal conditions. Srinagar airport is the nearest airport. You drive out through Ganderbal, Kangan and Gagangir, following the Sindh river most of the way.
In winter, add time for checks, queues and slow driving on snow. Agree a return time with your driver that fits the day's traffic advisory before you leave.
The 6.4 km Z-Morh tunnel is what keeps the approach to town open. It is a separate project from the Zoji La tunnel further up the road, which is why Sonmarg being reachable says nothing about Zoji La or Zero Point.
Ask for a written cab quote. It should list the vehicle, pickup point, waiting time, parking or entry charges, and any chain charges. Check whether local sightseeing in Sonmarg is included or needs a separate local arrangement.
Anti-skid chains are not optional in snowfall. A January 2026 traffic advisory specifically warned vehicles against travelling without them. An SUV or 4x4 doesn't override a road closure either. That call belongs to the traffic police and an experienced local driver.
If you'd rather drive yourself, our self drive car rental in Srinagar comes winter-ready, and we'll tell you honestly whether that day's road is one you should be driving.
This is a suggested sequence, not a fixed timetable. Police cut-off times, weather and your driver's return plan always come first.
The night before. Check the J&K Traffic Police advisory and the weather warnings, and confirm the return time with your driver.
8 to 9 AM. Leave Srinagar only once the road is confirmed open. Carry snacks and water so a delay doesn't turn into a hungry family in a cold car.
Late morning. Reach Sonmarg, ask which visitor areas are open, and start with a short snow or photo stop. Judge the footing and how everyone is feeling before paying for any activity.
Around midday. Lunch somewhere you've confirmed is open. If Thajiwas is permitted and time, weather and footwear all allow it, do the agreed excursion. If not, stay with the town area.
Early afternoon. Start back at the agreed time. Don't add Zero Point or an extra trail because someone offers a last-minute deal.
If the road is restricted. Spend the day in Srinagar and try Sonmarg on your spare day. Never push a driver to test a closed road or look for an unofficial way around.
December to February is the snow season. The coldest stretch is Chillai Kalan, the forty days of harsh winter that run from 21 December to the end of January.
But a winter date can't guarantee the white landscape from the brochure. Rising Kashmir reported unusually low snowfall and fast melting in Sonmarg in February 2025.
Snow on the ground and snow falling during your visit are two different things. If either matters to you, ask for recent, dated photos of the actual visitor area, not an old valley video.
For a winter trip, a clear, safe travel window matters more than the heaviest snowfall forecast. If walking the Thajiwas route properly is your priority, come in the warmer months instead. Even the district administration presents it as a summer excursion.
For a first visit, keep Srinagar as your base and treat Sonmarg as a flexible day trip. An overnight stay makes sense only if you want a slower trip and can confirm the basics in writing.
Larger hotels. Radisson Hotel Sonamarg and Country Inn & Suites by Radisson Sonamarg both list on-site restaurants. Confirm they are operating for your dates and that the rooms are heated before you book.
On a budget. Compare keeping your Srinagar stay plus a return cab against a Sonmarg room, meals and transport. Don't pick the cheapest room without checking heating and road access.
Before booking anything overnight, ask about room heating, hot water hours, power backup, meals, whether a car can reach the entrance, and the cancellation terms if the weather closes the road. Greater Kashmir has reported power cuts in Sonmarg knocking out heating, geysers and hotel kitchens.
You will drink a lot of kahwa, the saffron and almond green tea, on any winter day in Kashmir, and Sonmarg is no exception. For a proper meal, ask for rogan josh, the slow-cooked lamb curry.
Treat these as dishes to ask about, not a promise of what every kitchen has. In winter, call ahead to check that lunch is being served, and whether non-residents can eat at hotel restaurants. Carry a simple packed backup, especially with children.
Here's a rough worked example for two adults sharing one return cab from Srinagar. Treat these as planning numbers only and get written quotes before you book.
| Expense | Rough allowance |
|---|---|
| Return cab for two | ₹6,000 total, so ₹3,000 per person |
| Lunch, tea and snacks | ₹600 per person |
| Optional activity or gear | ₹1,000 per person, only if needed and permitted |
| Contingency | ₹500 per person |
| Day trip total | ₹5,100 per person, ₹10,200 for two |
This leaves out accommodation, flights, insurance and anything your cab quote doesn't cover. Skip the optional activity and it drops to about ₹4,100 per person.
Sonmarg works best as a flexible day inside a longer Kashmir plan, not the centrepiece. Our Kashmir winter honeymoon trip keeps it exactly like that: a Sonmarg and Thajiwas day if conditions allow, with a Srinagar backup if they don't. If Gulmarg is also on your list, our guide to when snowfall starts in Gulmarg covers the other big winter day out.
