Gulmarg snowfall can start on the higher slopes in autumn, but December is a more realistic starting point for a snow-focused stay in town, and January and February usually bring stronger winter conditions. Fresh snow on your exact dates is never guaranteed, though. Even January has had long dry spells. The useful question isn't just "will there be snow?" It's whether you want to watch snow falling, spend time in a snow-covered landscape, or learn to ski. Those are three different holidays, and picking one makes the rest of your planning much easier. Planning note: This is a seasonal guide, reviewed on 28 October 2026. It isn't a live snow report or a forecast for December 2026 or January 2027. For your actual dates, message us on +91 8867269090 and we'll check current conditions and access for you. About the photo above: This is the Gulmarg meadow on 26 January 2025, with a Gondola cabin crossing over a fully snow-covered bowl. That's what late January can look like. It's not a promise for your week.
| Planning detail | What to know |
|---|---|
| Snow-focused timing | December to February is the core winter window. For a ski-led trip, lean towards late January or February, subject to actual snow and safety clearance. |
| Trip length | Allow 3 days and 2 nights in Gulmarg for sightseeing and a first ski lesson. Add more days if learning to ski is the priority. This is a suggested pace, not a weather guarantee. |
| Getting there | Fly to Srinagar, then go by road via Tangmarg. Gulmarg is roughly 55-60 km from Srinagar, depending on where you start. |
| Activity budget | One ski operator publishes beginner on-mountain costs of INR 3,500-5,000 per person per day. Hotel, meals and transfers are separate. |
| Checks before you leave | IMD weather updates, J&K Traffic Police notices and the official Gondola booking site. |
The first snowfall and the start of a useful winter holiday are not the same thing. The upper areas around Kongdoori and Apharwat can get snow before the town does. Snow often reaches the upper slopes around November, with better chances lower down from December. An early photo from the mountain is not proof that the road, hotels and meadow below are under settled snow.
For planning, separate these three things:
Fresh snowfall: Snow is actually falling while you're there. This depends on the weather system, not a fixed calendar date. An unusually dry January disrupted Gulmarg holidays in 2024.
Snow on the ground: Earlier snowfall is still lying where you'll be. Ask specifically about your hotel's surroundings and the town, rather than accepting a photo from an upper slope as your answer.
Skiable snow: There's enough usable cover and the terrain is cleared for skiing. A white-looking mountain can still have exposed rocks or restricted access.
Practical choice: Pick January or February if snow is the main reason you're travelling, but keep your booking terms flexible. For upper-mountain skiing, specialist ski advice favours late January onward rather than assuming early January is ready.
If you're comparing Gulmarg with the rest of the valley, our month-by-month guide to snowfall in Kashmir covers the other places.
Gulmarg in December suits travellers who want a winter break and can live with some uncertainty about how much snow has settled. Snow lower down becomes more likely than in autumn, but a December booking doesn't automatically mean deep snow or open ski terrain.
Early versus late December
Early December needs the most flexible expectations. Before committing to a snow-led plan, ask your hotel for a dated photo of its immediate surroundings and ask a ski school whether lessons are actually running. Treat these as condition checks, not predictions for the following week.
Late December is closer to the usual winter-activity period. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) describes the end of December to mid-February as a key snowy window, and its published 2026-27 course calendar lists a Gulmarg ski batch starting on 20 December. A scheduled course still isn't proof that there's enough snow for every activity or that the upper mountain is open.
Who December suits
Choose December if your holiday dates matter more than maximising ski time, and build a trip that still works with a scenic stay, good food and whatever snow activities are running. If watching snow fall is non-negotiable, fixed dates are a gamble, not a promise.
Gulmarg in January is colder than December on IMD's long-term averages, so good heating and proper winter clothing are central to the trip. It also helps to separate the first weeks of January from the second half. Specialist ski advice warns that early-season cover can still be thin, while late January usually gives a stronger base for skiing.
January doesn't mean snow every day. Reuters reported bare slopes and cancelled holidays during the unusually dry January of 2024. Use the month as a sensible seasonal choice, not as a substitute for a current snow report.
December or January?
| Your priority | December | January |
|---|---|---|
| A first winter holiday | A reasonable option if the dates suit and your activities stay flexible. | Stronger for skiing later in the month, but still weather-dependent. |
| Learning to ski | Confirm nursery-slope cover and that lessons are running before paying. | More promising later in the month. Still confirm lessons are running. |
| Upper-mountain skiing | Don't assume Gondola sightseeing access means skiing is open. | Check snow depth, terrain clearance and lift access. Early January can still be marginal. |
| Cold-weather comfort | Mean daily max 4.6°C, mean daily min -4.8°C. | Mean daily max 0.7°C, mean daily min -7.7°C. |
Use Gulmarg's own station figures, not Srinagar's, to plan clothing and accommodation. The table below uses IMD's 1991-2020 climate normals for the Gulmarg station.
| Month | Mean daily maximum | Mean daily minimum |
|---|---|---|
| November | 9.0°C | -0.6°C |
| December | 4.6°C | -4.8°C |
| January | 0.7°C | -7.7°C |
| February | 1.8°C | -6.4°C |
| March | 5.4°C | -2.7°C |
These are averages of daily highs and lows over that period, not the full range and not a forecast for your dates. Check IMD's current forecast before you leave, and don't use a town-level average to judge how cold it will feel at the higher Gondola stages.
Srinagar is the airport gateway, followed by a road transfer to Gulmarg through Tangmarg. On a clear road the drive from Srinagar takes around an hour and a half. Don't count on that time on a snow day.
The Tangmarg winter check
The final climb is where winter transport matters most. A January 2026 order from the local SDM made anti-skid chains mandatory for all vehicles on the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road during snowfall and icy conditions. A 4x4 doesn't exempt you from whatever chain rule is in force on your travel day.
If you'd rather drive yourself, self-drive car rental in Srinagar is an option, but the same chain rule applies to every vehicle on that road.
Within Gulmarg, plan short outings and don't assume everything is an easy walk in snow. Before booking a stay, ask how guests get from the vehicle drop-off point to the entrance and how luggage is handled. Keep a night in Srinagar before your flight as a buffer, rather than timing a snowbound mountain transfer tightly against check-in.
Ride the Gondola
The Gondola runs in two stages: Gulmarg to Kongdoori, then higher towards Apharwat. Book only through the official J&K Cable Car Corporation ticketing site, which warns visitors against touts.
Travel listings commonly quote around INR 800 for Phase 1 and INR 1,000 for Phase 2, or INR 1,800 for both, for domestic visitors. Treat these as rough references, not a confirmed price. Check the passenger category, fees, time slot and final fare on the official portal before you pay.
Keep your e-ticket and ID handy, follow the instructions on your booking, and leave room in the day for delays. Winter storms can stop the Gondola, so a ticket isn't a guaranteed ride.
Take a beginner ski lesson
First-time skiers should start with an instructor on a suitable beginner slope, not treat a sightseeing ride as an invitation to ski the upper mountain. Gulmarg has beginner instruction as well as advanced terrain, but access depends on the snow and that day's safety calls.
Ask how much actual instruction time is included, how many learners share one instructor, and whether skis, boots, poles, a helmet and any lift access are included. A short supervised introduction is a better first goal than trying to "do skiing" between a transfer and a Gondola slot.
Try sledging or a snowmobile
Sledge and snowmobile rides are part of Gulmarg's winter offering, depending on local operation and conditions. Before agreeing, confirm the route, duration, who rides with you, the safety gear and the total price. Ask whether a quoted sledge fare covers the ride back as well as the ride out.
Keep these optional. If an operator can't explain the route or safety arrangements clearly, pick something else rather than paying just because it's on the usual tourist circuit.
Make room for quieter moments
Not every good winter experience needs a ticket. Leave time for a short walk on a cleared route near your hotel, a warm drink after an outing, and photos when the light allows. On a first visit, this matters more than squeezing in one more ride.
Don't add Alpather Lake as a casual winter walk. IISM presents the lake trek as a summer activity, and the upper mountain has real avalanche terrain. Any winter mountain outing needs proper local assessment, equipment and expertise, not just a pin on a map.
This plan is for travellers organising Gulmarg on their own. It uses two nights in Gulmarg and keeps the main experiences interchangeable. It's built for sightseeing and a first ski lesson, not an intensive ski course.
Day one: Arrive and settle
Morning: Leave Srinagar after checking the road notice. Sort out any chains or vehicle change needed at Tangmarg.
Afternoon: Check in, confirm the heating and hot water work, and get fitted for ski equipment if you're taking a lesson the next day.
Evening: Stay close to the hotel and ask for the next day's Gondola, snow and road updates.
Day two: Gondola or lesson
Morning: Take your booked Gondola slot if it's running, or use good conditions for a pre-arranged beginner lesson. Let confirmed bookings and local advice decide the order.
Afternoon: Keep a second activity optional instead of forcing both a full lesson and the whole Gondola ride into one rigid day.
Evening: Eat nearby and go over the return-road plan with your driver.
Day three: Flexible departure
Morning: Fit in a short local outing if conditions allow, or use the time for anything moved from day two.
Afternoon: Head back towards Srinagar once the road is open. Don't treat this as a guaranteed flight-connection day.
If snow or wind changes the plan: Follow staff and official directions, postpone exposed outings and use the hotel as your base. If the lower slopes are also unsuitable, don't replace a cancelled Gondola ride with an improvised walk higher up the mountain.
If you'd rather not juggle chains, Gondola slots and ski bookings yourself, Gulmarg is the snow core of our Kashmir winter group trip. It's a 7-day trip, and two of those days are built around Gulmarg.
Day 5, into Gulmarg on foot: We drive to Tangmarg, pick up winter gear, and walk into Gulmarg on a guided snow trek with a local guide. The afternoon is the Gondola, Phase 1 to Kongdoori and Phase 2 towards Apharwat. That night is at a mountain resort in Gulmarg.
Day 6, on the snow: Beginner ski or snowboard lessons on gentle slopes, a short walk across the golf course to St Mary's Church, and an afternoon at Drang waterfall. Sledging and ATV rides are there if you want them.
Gondola tickets for both phases, ski hire and instructor fees are included, so most of the budget section below is already covered if you travel with us. Sledging, ATV and pony rides are optional and paid locally. The rest of the week covers a Dal Lake houseboat, Pahalgam, Srinagar's old city and a snow trek near Naranag, with departures every week through the season.
Every activity still depends on that week's snow and safety calls, same as everything else in this guide. Message us on +91 8867269090 with your dates and we'll tell you what conditions look like.
In Gulmarg in winter, compare the heated, usable room you'll actually stay in, not just the photo or the headline rate. These are starting points for enquiries, not inspected recommendations.
| Stay style | Option to ask about | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury and comfort | The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa lists controlled in-room heating and hot and cold water in its property fact sheet. | Final winter rate, meal plan, access and the exact room category. |
| Ski-focused stay | Pine Palace markets resort and Platinum rooms with ski rentals and lessons. | Which property and room is quoted, heating, equipment storage and what the lessons include. |
| Cottage or group option | JKTDC Gulmarg Hutments lists several cottage sizes and room types. | Winter availability and the full heating charge. Some larger cottages list an extra central-heating fee. |
One detail to catch before paying: JKTDC's listing shows INR 7,500 per night for central heating on request for selected larger cottage categories, not as a charge on every unit. Get the exact heating arrangement and total charge for your room in writing.
If Gulmarg prices are beyond your budget, compare a day trip from Srinagar, but factor in another weather-dependent drive and less time on the snow. Staying overnight is about a relaxed pace, not a requirement for visiting.
Start with kahwa, Kashmir's traditional green tea, and try rogan josh, a lamb dish, or yakhni, cooked in a curd-based gravy. Dum aloo is another Kashmiri dish worth asking for, especially if you need vegetarian meals.
For a named option, Cloves at The Khyber serves all-day dining including Kashmiri dishes like rogan josh, and Chaikash is the property's tea lounge. If you're not staying there, confirm access and reservations before making the trip rather than assuming they take walk-ins.
A meal plan makes a short winter stay simpler. Ask what's served, when dinner ends and whether dietary needs can be handled. Don't assume a full wazwan is available without booking it in advance.
There's no reliable single daily budget for Gulmarg without your dates, room category, group size and activities. Use the published references below to structure your enquiries, not as a full holiday quote.
| Item | Published reference | What it excludes or needs |
|---|---|---|
| Gondola sightseeing | Around INR 800 for Phase 1, INR 1,000 for Phase 2, INR 1,800 combined, as indicative domestic listings. | Confirm the current official fare, category, fees and conditions. |
| Beginner ski day | INR 3,500-5,000 per person, one operator's approximate on-mountain estimate. | Stay, meals and transfers are separate. Confirm equipment, lift and instruction scope. |
| IISM residential course | Published 2026-27 14-day courses: INR 10,000 up to age 25, INR 20,000 above 25. Listed eligibility is age 10 to 40. | Subject to admission, seats and terms. IISM lists boarding, lodging, training and ski equipment as included. |
| Hotel and winter transfer | Ask for a date-specific, itemised quote. | Check taxes, heating, meals, chains, vehicle changes, waiting time and cancellation terms. |
The IISM course is a separate scheduled training programme, not a walk-in lesson or a price for a three-day sightseeing trip. For a normal holiday, keep accommodation and transfers separate from optional activities so you can see what changes if the weather cancels part of the plan.
Pack to stay dry: Thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer, an insulated waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, grippy winter boots, warm socks, gloves and a hat. Add sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen.
Check rental fit: Try boots on before starting an activity, ask for a helmet for skiing, and confirm whether clothing and protective gear cost extra.
Respect altitude: According to IISM, the upper Gondola reaches around 3,980 metres. Headache with nausea, dizziness or unusual tiredness after going up can be signs of altitude sickness. Stop climbing, get help, and go down if symptoms get worse.
Respect closures: Fresh snow can create avalanche risk. Experienced off-piste skiers need proper guiding, training and rescue gear, including a transceiver, shovel and probe.
Read the date: Gulmarg Avalanche Center advisories are time-limited and normally expire after 24 hours unless stated otherwise. An old or off-season notice is not clearance for your outing.
Check insurance: Confirm your cover for your actual activity, altitude, rescue and evacuation. Don't assume standard travel insurance covers off-piste skiing.
On local etiquette: ask before photographing people, follow staff directions at places of worship, and keep music and litter out of shared outdoor spaces. Agree the price for any optional service before it starts rather than arguing over an unclear fare afterwards.
