The Kolukkumalai jeep safari starts in the dark at Suryanelli, climbs a broken tea-estate track in a 4x4, and ends with a short walk to a ridge where the sun comes up over the Western Ghats. It is early, it is bumpy, and the view depends on the weather. On a clear morning, it is one of the best starts to a day you can get in the Kerala high range. We run this sunrise on Day 6 of our Offbeat Kerala Tour, so this guide is written the way we brief our own travellers: what the ride is really like, what it costs, and what to check before you pay. Update, 20 October 2026: Kolukkumalai jeep services stopped in mid October because of a drivers' strike, and online bookings were still paused when we checked today. Confirm the safari is running before you pay anyone or drive to Suryanelli. You can also message us on WhatsApp at +91 8867269090 and we will tell you what we are hearing on the ground.
The jeep leaves Suryanelli, about 30 km from Munnar, at around 4 AM. It covers roughly 12 km of rough estate road to a drop-off point, and you walk the rest of the way to the sunrise viewpoint. The official fare is per jeep, not per person, and each jeep takes a maximum of six people. Plan on being back in Suryanelli for breakfast around 9 AM.
| Planning detail | What to know |

| Distance by jeep | Around 12 km of rough estate track to the drop-off |
| Sunrise slot | 4:00 AM to 9:00 AM |
| Jeep capacity | Six passengers, maximum |
| Official fare | ₹3,100 per jeep plus a ₹95 processing fee (October 2026) |

Prices and slots change, so treat these as planning numbers and confirm for your date.
This is not a scenic drive with a viewpoint at the end. The ride is the outing. Once the jeep leaves the tarmac, the track turns narrow, rocky and steep, and you will be thrown around for most of the climb. Allow up to two hours to reach the drop-off point.
Most people love it. Some people really do not. If anyone in your group is pregnant, has back or neck problems, or gets badly motion sick, talk to a doctor before booking. There is no smoother way up for tourists.
In the dark, you see almost nothing on the way up except headlights and the outline of tea bushes. The real reveal is the drive down, when the slopes you climbed through appear in full daylight. Keep your phone ready for the return, not just the summit.
On a good day, the Kolukkumalai sunrise gives you layered ridges, valleys filled with low cloud, and Tamil Nadu villages far below. On a bad day, you stand in fog. Nobody can promise you the photograph you have seen online, and anyone who does is selling you something.
It is also not a quiet spot. A big crowd gathers on the hilltop for sunrise. Weekdays outside long weekends and holidays are your best chance of a calmer ridge, but expect company.
Near the main viewpoint is Singhapara, a rock named for its lion-like shape, and many jeep routes include it. It is worth a look, but it is not worth standing on an exposed edge for a picture.
Everything starts at Suryanelli, so that is where you need to be the night before, or very early in the morning.
From Munnar: Suryanelli is about 30 km away. If you stay in Munnar town, you will be leaving your hotel well before 4 AM. Some jeep drivers offer hotel pickup for an extra charge. Ask clearly whether your quote starts at your hotel or at the Suryanelli jeep stand, because those are two different prices.
From Kochi: Cochin International Airport and Aluva railway station are about 110 km from Munnar. Do not try to arrive overnight and go straight onto a 4 AM jeep. Reach the hills the afternoon before.
Your own car: Drive it to Suryanelli and park it there. Normal cars cannot do the final climb, and tourists go up in the authorised jeeps only.
The sunrise slot runs from 4:00 AM to 9:00 AM, starting from Suryanelli. Sunrise itself shifts through the year, so do not plan around a fixed "6 AM sunrise". Your driver will set the departure time based on the season and the road.
Older blogs tell you to turn up at the Suryanelli DTPC counter before dawn and get a jeep there. Booking now runs online with jeeps allotted in advance, so sort it out before the day instead of hoping for a spot on the morning. A booking page being online does not mean jeeps are running, especially right now.
Before you pay, get clear answers to these:
The most important thing to know: the official fare is per jeep, not per person. Fill a jeep with six people and the cost per head drops a lot.
| Cost item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Official jeep fare | ₹3,100 per jeep plus ₹95 processing fee (October 2026) |
| Hotel pickup from Munnar | Usually extra. Ask for it to be shown separately. |
| Tea factory entry | Check the current fee and whether your jeep stops there |
| Longer guided walk | Often a separate guide fee plus waiting charges for the jeep |
| Food | Not included in a standard jeep booking |
Private operators quote higher, often with Munnar pickup bundled in. A higher price is not automatically a bad deal, but it should come with an itemised breakdown. If someone sells you a "shared safari", ask whether your seat is confirmed or depends on other people joining.
Winter mornings, from December to February, usually give you the best odds of a clear sky. Many people recommend a wider window of September to March.
Be careful with October and November. The northeast monsoon brings rain to Kerala and Tamil Nadu from October to December, and wet weather means fog at the top and a slippery track on the way up. Heavy rain can cancel the jeeps altogether. If the sunrise is the main reason for your trip, keep a spare morning in your plan. For the rest of the state, our guide on the best time to visit Kerala goes month by month.
This is how a normal sunrise morning goes when the safari is running. Times shift with the season and the driver.
The afternoon before. Check in near Suryanelli. Confirm the safari is running, get the pickup pin, and agree the full price. Lay out your clothes, shoes and torch before dinner, and sort out early breakfast or a snack.
Around 4 AM. Report at the agreed time. Let the driver set the pace on the climb. Nobody wins by rushing this road in the dark.
At the drop-off. Follow the guide or driver up the footpath to the viewing area. Give yourself time to watch the light change instead of running between photo spots, and stay back from the edges.
After sunrise. Stop at Singhapara or the tea factory if they are part of your route and open that day. Then come down slowly and enjoy the view you missed in the dark. Most jeeps are back in Suryanelli by around 9 AM.
After that. Do not plan a long trek or a tight transfer straight after. You have been up since well before dawn. Eat breakfast and give the day some slack.
People search for a Kolukkumalai trek and often mean the sunrise jeep safari. They are not the same thing.
| Option | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Sunrise jeep safari | The jeep does the climb. You walk a short stretch from the drop-off to the viewpoint. |
| Jeep plus guided walk | A longer walk around the estate with a guide. Ask for the route, duration, guide fee and jeep waiting charges. |
| Trekking up from Tamil Nadu | Check current permission for the exact route before you go. Do not rely on an old trail description. |
Older blogs describe a trek up from Kurangani in Tamil Nadu. Forest officials have said this route is not permitted, and as far as we know it has not reopened. There is an official Kurangani to Sambalaru trail of about 5 km with views towards Kolukkumalai, but it does not go to the Kolukkumalai summit. If you want a proper trek, book an authorised route. Do not improvise through the forest.
Pick your stay around the 4 AM start, not around a Munnar address.
| Base | Good for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Suryanelli | The shortest morning. You are already at the jeep stand. | Distance to the stand, early checkout, breakfast after you return |
| Chinnakanal | A quieter hillside stay close to Suryanelli | Whether jeep pickup is included or is a separate transfer |
| Munnar town | Keeping one base for a longer Munnar stay | A very early start and the full cost of the return transfer |
If you are looking at campsites for the sunrise, ask about toilets, bedding, rain cover and road access before you book on the strength of one photo.
Do not assume breakfast is part of the jeep. A standard booking covers the ride, so arrange food with your stay. Carry water and a small snack for the top, and ask about toilets before you leave Suryanelli.
The estate's old tea factory is the other reason to come up here. Ask your driver which factory your route stops at, because there is more than one tea factory around Suryanelli, and check its opening days before you count on the visit.
Mornings at the top are cold, even when Kochi is sweating. Pack for it:
Only use authorised jeeps and do not let a driver squeeze in more than six people. At the top, stay in the viewing area and keep off exposed rocks for photos.
This is a working tea estate. Ask before you photograph the people working there, stay out of the tea rows, do not pluck leaves, and carry your rubbish back down.
On our Offbeat Kerala Tour, Kolukkumalai is Day 6 of seven days, and we have built the route so the 4 AM start is easy. Day 5 ends with the night in Suryanelli after Ramakkalmedu, so you are already at the jeep stand when the alarm goes off.
The local jeep to Kolukkumalai is included. Your local Malayali guide handles the timings and the coordination, and on operating days you visit the tea factory before coming back down to Suryanelli for breakfast. From there, the group drives down through Gap Road and Lockhart Gap towards Fort Kochi. Tea factory entry fees are not included.
The rest of the trip covers the canals of Maravanthuruthu, the ridges of Uluppuni in Vagamon and the cardamom country around Kattappana. If you are still putting your own route together, start with our list of offbeat places in Kerala.
