Most people plan Kerala around December and January because that's when everyone goes. The sunset at Alleppey was still worth it. But Kerala needs a destination-by-destination answer, not one window.
We did the December trip the first time. Fort Kochi was packed wall to wall, Alleppey houseboats were lined up like a parking lot on water, and Munnar smelled more of tourist buses than cardamom. Prices were up 40%. Every guesthouse we liked was full. We made it work, but we came back with a question: who decided December was the answer for all of Kerala?
Since then we've sent groups in September, in March, in early October before the rush hits. A couple who wanted quiet mornings on the backwaters. A solo traveler who specifically asked for no crowds. A group of six from Bangalore who wanted Wayanad green without paying peak rates. Each time, the trip worked better than the December version. Not because December is wrong. Because Kerala is not one place, and one month cannot be the right answer for all of it.
Here is what we actually tell people now.
The sweet spot for most travelers is October, early November, and March. Weather is good, crowds are manageable, and prices haven't hit their December ceiling. If you can travel in September, even better. The landscape is still green from the monsoon, waterfalls are running full, and you'll have Wayanad and Thekkady almost to yourself.
December 20 to January 5 is when prices skyrocket and availability disappears. If that's when you can travel, book at least 3 months in advance and expect to pay 30-50% more for the same properties.
Now, destination by destination.
Best months: September, October, March
Munnar in December is cold, misty, and full of people. The tea estates look the same in October, the roads are clearer, and you'll actually be able to stop on the highway without a bus behind you. September brings waterfalls running at full capacity. Mattupetty Dam has water in it. Eravikulam National Park opens after monsoon around October and the Nilgiri tahr sightings are regular.
Avoid: May and June. Heat plus humidity at lower elevations. The high range stays cooler but the drive up from Kochi is uncomfortable.
Temperature range: October to February sits between 8°C and 20°C at night. Carry a jacket even in October.
Best months: November, December, early January
This one actually earns its peak season reputation, but only for the backwaters. The water is calm, the mornings are still, and the light at sunset does what it's supposed to do. We've been there in September and the backwaters were swollen and grey from monsoon runoff. Not the same experience.

The catch: December 20 to January 10 is when houseboat prices double. A decent houseboat runs Rs 8,000-12,000 per night in November. That same boat goes to Rs 15,000-18,000 in Christmas week. If you want Alleppey right, go in November or the first two weeks of December. Same weather, fraction of the crowd, better prices.
Avoid: June to August. Monsoon hits the coast hard and boat rides are off.
Best months: September, October, February
Wayanad is where the conventional advice completely breaks down. Everyone says October to February. But Wayanad in September, two weeks after the heavy monsoon eases, is something else. The forest is dense and wet, the air smells of soil and eucalyptus, Chembra Peak has a stream running down it, and Soochipara Falls is actually worth the walk.

February is also excellent. Dry enough to trek, cool enough to sleep without AC, and the wildlife at Muthanga is active in the mornings.
December in Wayanad is fine but unremarkable. You're paying peak rates for weather that's available in October and February at half the price.
Best months: October to February (avoid Christmas week)
Fort Kochi's charm is in its streets, cafes, and the Chinese fishing nets at dusk. Weather matters less here than in hill stations or backwaters. October to February keeps it comfortable for walking. The problem is December 24 to January 2, when Fort Kochi becomes one of the most crowded places in south India. The lanes around Jew Town and Princess Street are shoulder to shoulder.
Go in October or early November if you want Fort Kochi the way it actually looks in photos. Empty lanes in the morning, fishermen at the nets, filter coffee without waiting for a table.
Best months: October, November, February, March
Thekkady is a year-round destination with one clear exception: avoid peak monsoon (July-August) if you want boat rides on Periyar Lake. The forest closes sections during heavy rain and wildlife sightings drop.
October and November are the best combination of green landscape and active wildlife. The elephants are visible near the lake in the mornings. February and March are drier and better for the Bamboo Rafting experience. Bamboo Rafting is run by the Periyar Tiger Reserve. It costs Rs 2,900 per person for both Indian and foreign nationals, with the same rate on weekdays and holidays.
Best months: November to March
These are straightforward beach destinations. November to March is when the Arabian Sea is calm, swimming is safe, and the cliffs at Varkala are worth sitting on. April and May get hot and humid on the coast. June to September is monsoon, the sea is rough, and most beach shacks close.
Varkala in late October is genuinely underrated. Cliffs, sunset, almost no one, and guesthouses at 40% off peak rates.

December is not wrong. But it is sold much harder than it deserves for most types of travelers. If you are going for Alleppey houseboats and have booked 3 months ahead, December works. If you are going for Munnar, Wayanad, or Thekkady, you are paying a premium for weather you can get in October or March at half the cost.
The travelers who get the best version of Kerala are the ones who go in the gaps. First two weeks of October. Late February. First two weeks of March. The landscape is the same. The crowd is not.
