Kashmir does not have one winter. It has five different months that happen to be cold. November is late autumn with frost on the grass. December is when the snow starts arriving. January is the real thing: the deepest cold, the heaviest snow, and the month the valley slows right down. February keeps the snow but softens the edges. March is snow up in Gulmarg and spring down in Srinagar, sometimes on the same day. Which month is right depends on what you want: quiet, first snow, skiing, the full deep freeze, or blossoms. This guide goes month by month so you can pick, then covers where to go, how to get around when the roads turn white, and the mistakes we see people make every winter.

In Srinagar, snow usually falls between early December and late February, and January is the snowiest month on average. March is wetter and much less snowy in the city. Gulmarg sits far higher, so it gets snow earlier and holds it longer.
Rough daytime temperatures in Srinagar: mid-teens °C in November, around 9 to 10°C in December, 7 to 8°C in January, 10 to 11°C in February and around 15°C in March. Nights drop to freezing or below in deep winter. Gulmarg is always colder, windier and snowier, so never judge the mountains by the Srinagar forecast.
The short version:
November is the bridge between Kashmir's golden autumn and its white winter. The chinar reds of October fade, the air turns dry and sharp, mornings are frosty, and the busy places go quiet. Srinagar has cool days and cold evenings. Gulmarg and the higher reaches may get the season's first snow.
This is the month for people who value having Dal Lake to themselves more than they value guaranteed snow. Shikara rides without the queue, Old Srinagar and the Mughal gardens without the crowds, misty mornings, bare trees, snow on the peaks. Prices outside holiday dates are lower too.
Do not book November expecting a snow holiday. Gulmarg may turn white after a weather system, but the valley floor stays brown, gold and frosted. It is a late autumn trip with a chance of snow as a bonus.
A good November plan: Srinagar base for two nights, a day up to Gulmarg for the views and any early snow, a quiet night in Pahalgam, and a spare day back in Srinagar.
December starts cold and short, and gets properly wintry as the month goes on. Snow reaches the higher places first, and Gulmarg is the most dependable spot for an early winter experience. Srinagar can get snow in late December, but when and how much changes every year.
Around 21 December, Chillai Kalan begins: the 40 days Kashmiris count as the hardest part of winter. It also lines up with Christmas and New Year, when demand at Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar jumps. If you are travelling late in the month, book stays, transport and the Gulmarg Gondola early.

December suits couples and families after their first proper winter landscape, and anyone with Christmas or New Year leave. Houseboat nights, kahwa, wazwan, a heater in the room.
A good December plan: two nights in Srinagar, two nights in Gulmarg for snow and the Gondola, a Pahalgam day or night if the road is clear, and one spare day. If snow is the whole point, a night in Gulmarg beats a tightly timed day trip every time.
January is Kashmir at its most intense. Frosty mornings, sub-zero nights, frozen pipes, icy streets and heavy snow at altitude. It is Srinagar's snowiest month on average, and Gulmarg has its deepest, most reliable snow.
This is the month for people who want Kashmir at its most dramatic, not people who need every stop to run on schedule. Fresh snow can shut the Jammu to Srinagar highway (NH44) for a day or more, delay flights, and restrict vehicles on the roads to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam.
What you get: snow-loaded pines, white meadows, silent mornings, and the chance of waking up to fresh snowfall. What comes with it: delays, wet shoes, short daylight, frozen paths, closures, and the occasional power or heating cut.
January is best for skiing and snowboarding in Gulmarg, deep snow photography, and slow trips built around snow rather than sightseeing.
A good January plan: land and rest in Srinagar, three nights in Gulmarg with a spare day built in, back to Srinagar for food and crafts, Pahalgam only if the road and forecast agree, and a buffer day before your flight. Never put a long mountain drive on the same day as a departing flight in January.
February is usually the best compromise between deep winter and travel comfort. Gulmarg still has a strong snow base, skiing is in full swing, and the days get a little longer and milder. Srinagar and Pahalgam can still get fresh snow, though nobody can promise you a date.
Mountain weather is still unpredictable. A clear morning can cloud over fast, and Gondola Phase 2 can close for wind, low visibility, heavy snow or avalanche control.
February works for travellers who want snow without the hardest part of January, honeymooners, families after snow play, skiers who want an established base, and photographers who want snow with more daylight. For most first-time winter visitors, this is the month we would point you to.
A good February plan: a night in Srinagar, two in Gulmarg, two in Pahalgam for a slower pace, a last night in Srinagar for the old city and shopping, and one spare day.
March gives you two seasons in one trip. Srinagar softens: days warm up, gardens start waking, and rain becomes more common. The higher Gulmarg slopes can still hold a lot of snow, so you get early spring in the city and winter up the mountain on the same trip.
It is not the month if you want snowfall in Srinagar. It is the month if you want snow in Gulmarg with easier sightseeing down in the valley. Snowmelt makes slush, and March is one of Srinagar's wettest months.
Late in March, the almond blossom may start, depending on the year.
A good March plan: two days in Srinagar for the city and gardens, two nights in Gulmarg for snow and the Gondola, two in Pahalgam for riverside walks and the first signs of spring, then back to Srinagar.
Srinagar is the base: the airport, houseboats, Dal Lake, the food, the crafts, the old city. Snow in the city is possible from late December to February but less reliable than Gulmarg, and it melts faster. Pick a stay with proper heating, hot water and vehicle access. A houseboat is lovely, but if you feel the cold, check exactly how it is heated before you book.
Gulmarg is the centre of a Kashmir snow trip: the Gondola, skiing, snowboarding, sledging and deep winter scenery. The ski season usually runs late December to March, depending on snow, wind, avalanche control and lift status. The Gondola has two stages: Phase 1 goes up to Kongdori, Phase 2 continues toward Apharwat. Book tickets only through the official J&K Cable Car Corporation site, and recheck slots and operations before you go.
Pahalgam is the quieter winter choice: the Lidder river, pine forest, village life and snowy side valleys when the roads allow. It suits couples and families who want scenery and rest more than skiing. Side trips change after every snowfall, so do not plan on every valley. Note that Baisaran and Chandanwari are under a J&K closure order to 31 December 2026; check with us for January onwards.
Sonamarg is now reachable year round in principle, thanks to the Sonamarg (Z-Morh) tunnel opened in January 2025. In practice, snowfall, avalanche risk and traffic controls still close the road some days. Add it only when the route is officially open that day.
Offbeat in winter: most offbeat valleys are snowbound from December to February, but a few stay reachable on and off: Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, the main Lolab valley and Naranag. By air: Srinagar airport is the fastest way in. Heavy snow and low visibility can delay or cancel flights, so leave buffer time before any onward connection.
By road: NH44 connects Jammu and Srinagar, but snow, landslides and traffic controls interrupt it through winter. Check the J&K Traffic Police road status before setting out, and trust the official update over any blog or driver's guess.
Getting around: use a driver who knows winter roads, or a car that suits the conditions. On snowbound mountain roads, the authorities can make anti-skid chains compulsory and restrict which vehicles go up. If you are driving yourself, do not attempt the Tangmarg to Gulmarg climb during active snowfall unless you have real experience on ice. Layers beat one heavy jacket over cotton. You will move between heated rooms, cold streets and snowfields all day.
Winter is the best time to eat in Kashmir. Harissa for breakfast (it is a winter-only dish), nadru yakhni, haak, rogan josh, tabak maaz, fresh bread from the kandur, and kahwa after a cold day. If you order a full wazwan, order for the size of your group; it is not a one-person tasting plate.
When the police suspend traffic or make chains compulsory after snowfall, that is the system working, not failing.
Expecting snow everywhere. Fresh snow in Gulmarg does not mean Srinagar and Pahalgam look the same. Altitude changes everything.
Doing Gulmarg as a day trip. After snowfall, a Srinagar to Gulmarg day can disappear into traffic, chain fitting and Gondola queues. One or two nights up there gives the trip room.
Cramming the plan. Daylight is short and roads are slow. Two relaxed bases beat a new hotel every night.
Ignoring the heating. A beautiful room with no reliable heating or hot water ruins a winter trip. Check room heating, power backup and hot water timings before you pay.
Booking tight connections. Weather can hit roads and flights at the same time. Leave a buffer before international flights, weddings or anything fixed.
Pick November for silence and late autumn. December for the festive season and a shot at first snow. January for the deepest cold and strongest snow. February for the most balanced snow trip. March for snow up high and spring below.
If snow is your main reason for coming, plan for late January to February. Even then, nobody can promise it will snow on your dates. Build the trip around winter, not around a forecast.
