A houseboat in Srinagar is the night most couples remember from a Kashmir honeymoon. Snow on the Zabarwan hills, kahwa on the deck, the lake going quiet after dark. It can also be the night that goes wrong: a "lake view" room that looks into the next boat, a heater that runs for two hours, a shikara back to shore that costs extra. The difference is a few questions asked before you pay. The Dal Lake houseboat
A Dal Lake houseboat is the one everyone pictures. Boats line the lake along the Boulevard, flower sellers paddle up to your deck, and shikaras cross all day. It's about 17 km from Srinagar airport and close to almost everything you'll see in the city. That energy is the appeal. It's also the catch: the main part of the lake, from Nehru Park onwards, is where most tourists end up, and a quiet evening there is hard to find.
Nigeen Lake
Nigeen sits just west of Dal, beside Hari Parbat, and connects to it. It's our pick for couples: fewer vendors, still water, and mornings where the loudest thing is a kingfisher.

A deluxe double room on a Dal Lake houseboat starts at around ₹3,900 a night, room only. At the top end, luxury houseboats go up to about ₹25,000 a night. Where a boat sits in that range depends on the category, the season, the view and the meal plan.

Depending on the boat, winter heating can be a traditional bukhari, electric heaters, electric blankets, or a mix of these. Many boats also hand out hot water bottles at night. What you get varies a lot from boat to boat, so ask:
Get heating hours and charges in writing. That one message prevents the most common winter complaint. In winter, also reach the ghat before dark: the shikara crossing gets cold fast once the sun goes.
Every houseboat in Srinagar is meant to be registered with the J&K Tourism Department, so ask for the registration number before you book. Boats are graded Deluxe, A, B, C and D class based on facilities, so ask which category yours is too.

Dinner on the boat, with the lake going dark outside, beats any restaurant in town. Check whether it's served privately or in a shared dining room, whether they'll make a simple Kashmiri meal, and whether kahwa is included. Mention vegetarian preferences, allergies and spice levels before arrival. If "honeymoon decoration" is offered, ask for a photo first, and say clearly what you'd like or that you'd rather skip it.
A transfer and a shikara ride aren't the same thing. The transfer gets you and your bags from the ghat to the boat. The ride is the slow lake experience you came for. Ask for a private shikara, agree the duration, route and price before setting off, keep shopping stops optional, and ask for blankets in winter. Sunrise gives the stillest water; sunset gives the atmosphere.
With one night, you get the experience: arrival, a sunset shikara, dinner on board and an early morning on the deck.
With two nights, you can actually relax. The second evening is easier because you already know the staff, the routine and the transfer. Spend the middle day around Srinagar and get back before sunset.
