Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Approach to Tulian Valley Base Camp

Drive 85 km • Trek 9 to 11 km • Gain ~1,000m

Trail: Forest Ascent > Meadow Traverse > Steep Ridge Sections > Open Alpine Valley

Begin with an early alpine departure from Srinagar, transitioning from valley roads to the trekking hub of Pahalgam. After final gear checks, the trail climbs steadily through dense pine and deodar forests. The forest canopy gradually opens into the expansive meadow of Baisaran, offering the first sweeping Himalayan views.

Beyond Baisaran, gradients increase as the route winds through thicker woodland toward Kanimarg. The ascent becomes more sustained here, demanding controlled pacing and hydration discipline. As tree cover thins, the landscape transitions dramatically into the wide, wind exposed Tulian Valley.

Camp is established in the upper section of Tulian Valley near freshwater streams. Evenings are cold and windy. Expect dramatic alpine sunsets and clear night skies. Early rest is essential for summit push preparation.

  • Maintain steady pace to avoid early fatigue
  • Hydrate consistently (3L minimum)
  • Evening temperatures drop significantly below freezing
  • No mobile network beyond Pahalgam

Day 2: Summit Push to Tulian Lake

8 km Round Trip • Summit at 3,684m • 5 to 7 Hours

Trail: Valley Floor > Narrowing Marg > Scree Traverse > Boulder Scramble > Alpine Lake Basin

The most physically demanding section of the entire trek. The trail narrows as you leave the valley floor into Tulian Marg, where meadow gives way to a boulder strewn corridor. Footing becomes the primary challenge as the terrain shifts to large, uneven rocks requiring deliberate foot placement with every step.

There are rockfall prone segments and at least one icy stream crossing depending on the season. Move one at a time on unstable boulders and avoid stopping under loose rock slopes. The final approach is a sustained scramble over large boulders before the lake basin opens up.

Tulian Lake sits in a dramatic cirque of snow covered peaks. Ice chunks float on the surface even in peak season. The altitude, the silence, and the scale of the surrounding walls make this one of the most raw alpine environments accessible on a 3 day trek in Kashmir.

Descend carefully using shorter steps and trekking poles. The boulder field is harder on knees and ankles during descent, especially if afternoon clouds bring moisture. Return to base camp for rehydration and warm layers as valley temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. Post summit health check is mandatory.

  • Mandatory early start (06:30) to avoid afternoon weather buildup
  • Carry minimum 2L water per person, no water sources on the ascent
  • Trekking poles and high ankle shoes are non negotiable for the boulder section
  • Hard turnaround time applies regardless of position if weather deteriorates
  • No facilities, tea stalls, or shelters between camp and lake

Day 3: Descent and Extraction

9 to 11 km Descent • Drop ~1,000m • Drive 85 km

Trail: Alpine Valley > Ridge Descent > Forest Trail > Meadow Exit > Road Transfer

After a thorough camp breakdown and zero trace sweep, retrace the route through Tulian Valley toward Kanimarg. The descent is faster but demands attention, particularly on forest sections that can be slippery if overnight rain has occurred.

Use Baisaran as a final regroup point before the sustained drop to Pahalgam. The last section through pine forest requires controlled speed to protect tired knees and ankles after three days of sustained trekking.

Transfer to vehicle at Pahalgam for the 85 km drive back to Srinagar, arriving by early evening. Keep recovery footwear accessible in your bag for the drive.

All waste must be packed out to Pahalgam. Camp sites are inspected for micro litter including wrappers and tissue. Leave no trace discipline is strictly enforced. Any trekker showing post altitude symptoms is monitored during descent and prioritized for vehicle transfer from the earliest accessible point.

  • Slippery conditions likely in forest sections after rain
  • Tape any hotspots or blisters before starting descent
  • Adjust trekking poles shorter for sustained downhill
  • Compression socks recommended for the return drive

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Tulian Lake Trek?
This is a moderate trek with long days, steep sections, and a challenging boulder climb to the lake on Day 2. No technical mountaineering is required, but good physical fitness and proper trekking shoes are essential. Prior trekking experience is recommended but not mandatory.
What is the best time to do this trek?
The best window is late June or July through September, when snow has largely melted from the trail and meadows are open. Heavy monsoon phases can still cause slippery trails and are best avoided for less experienced groups.
Is altitude sickness a concern?
Yes, the trek gains from 2,130m at Pahalgam to 3,684m at Tulian Lake, so AMS is a real risk. Our itinerary is designed with gradual acclimatization. We enforce a steady pace, constant hydration (3 to 4 litres per day), and carry oxygen cylinders and first aid kits. If symptoms persist, we arrange safe descent.
What about mobile network on the trek?
Mobile network is weak to non existent beyond Pahalgam. Treat Tulian Valley as a no network zone. Our guides carry satellite communication equipment for emergencies.
Do I need any permits?
Yes, forest and wildlife permits are required for camping around Pahalgam and the Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary area. We handle all permit arrangements as part of the trek package.
Can beginners do this trek?
While prior trekking experience is recommended, fit beginners who exercise regularly can attempt this trek. The key requirements are cardiovascular fitness for sustained walking at altitude and comfort with uneven rocky terrain on Day 2.

Price from Rs 7999 per person. Duration: 3 Days, 2 Nights.
