Kashmir in November sits between two seasons. The high mountains turn white first, cold air settles into the valley at night, and Gulmarg and Sonamarg may get their first proper snowfall. The valley also goes quiet. The autumn visitors have left and the December holiday rush hasn't started. Here's the one thing to understand before you book: snow in November is possible, not guaranteed. If you want first snow without the peak-winter crowd, come in the second half of the month, keep Gulmarg or another high spot in the plan, and leave room to follow the weather.
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| What's the weather like? | Cold mornings, mild sunny afternoons, near-freezing nights. Srinagar averages about 16°C by day and 1°C at night. |
| Does it snow? | Yes, mostly in the higher reaches. Timing and amount change every year. |
| Where is snow most likely? | Kongdoori and Apharwat above Gulmarg, then Gulmarg, Sonamarg and other high areas. |
| Will Srinagar get snow? | Usually not. When a weather system comes through, Srinagar tends to get rain while the mountains get snow. |
| Early or late November? | The second half gives better odds. No date guarantees snow. |
| Is it crowded? | Less than October or the December to January holiday season. |
| Can I ski? | Don't plan a November trip around skiing. Gulmarg's ski season usually starts around mid-December. |
November in Kashmir is cold but usually dry. According to IMD's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Srinagar, the city averages a high of about 15.9°C and a low of about 1.2°C in November, with around 27.7 mm of rain spread over roughly two rainy days.
In practice, that means sunny afternoons that feel pleasant in a light jacket, and a sharp drop the moment the sun goes behind the mountains. Mornings can be frosty. Gulmarg, Sonamarg and the higher valleys are a good deal colder than Srinagar, and wind at altitude makes it feel colder still.
Yes, but altitude decides almost everything. When a weather system reaches the valley, the higher mountains get snow while Srinagar and the lower areas get rain.
That's exactly what happened in mid-November 2024. Brighter Kashmir reported the season's first snow in the upper reaches of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, while Srinagar recorded rain.
The first snow can also come early. In the first week of November 2025, higher reaches received the season's first snowfall: about 2 inches in Sonamarg and 1 to 2 inches in Gulmarg and at Pir Ki Gali on the Mughal Road. Those are real examples, not a fixed yearly timetable.
An early snowfall doesn't predict the rest of winter either. A senior meteorological official has said there is no link between early snowfall and what the coming winter will bring.
The practical rule: November gives you a chance to see Kashmir's first snow, not a promise of a fully white holiday.
Snow arrives from the top down. The upper slopes can be white while the valley floor is still brown, gold or wet from rain.
Kongdoori and Apharwat. The upper Gulmarg Gondola zone gives you the best practical chance of finding snow in November. JKTDC's Gulmarg page puts Phase 1 at Kongdoori (about 10,500 ft) and Phase 2 near the top of Apharwat (about 3,980 m). Even when Gulmarg town has no snow on the ground, the upper slopes may have a fresh dusting or older patches. Phase 2 is exposed to strong wind and fast-changing visibility, so whether it runs depends on that day's conditions.
Gulmarg. Gulmarg is the most reliable November snow base because it combines altitude, road access and the Gondola to go higher still. Our Kashmir Autumn Trip, which we mostly run in November, gives Gulmarg a full day with Gondola Phase 1 and Phase 2 tickets included, weather permitting. Don't expect the meadow to stay white all month, though. Early snow can be thin and patchy, and a brown meadow in the morning and a white one after an overnight spell are both normal in November.
Sonamarg. Sonamarg and the mountains towards Zoji La often get early snow because of their height, and it was among the first places to turn white in both 2024 and 2025. Roads can change quickly after snowfall, so treat anything beyond the main town as weather-dependent. Our Kashmir Winter Honeymoon Package includes a day here, at Thajiwas Glacier and the Golden Meadows.
Pahalgam. Pahalgam can get a light cover during a stronger system later in the month. In November 2024, Sonamarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam all received fresh snow. You're more likely to see snowy peaks from Pahalgam than deep snow in town. Note that Baisaran and Chandanwari are currently closed to tourists, so check what's open before you plan a day around them.
Srinagar. Srinagar is the least dependable place to chase November snow. It can surprise you, but treat it as your arrival base, not the place your snow plans depend on.
Early November. The first ten days are a gamble. The highest slopes may already be white, and an early system can cover Gulmarg or Sonamarg, but lower areas usually still look like autumn. Good for travellers who'll be happy with mountain views even if no fresh snow falls.
Mid-November. Colder nights raise the chance of snow reaching the resorts. In 2024, a notable spell hit the higher reaches around 11 November, with more around the middle and later part of the month. A good middle ground if you want quiet and a fair shot at early snow.
Late November. The last ten days give the best November odds for a snow-focused trip. Colder ground helps fresh snow last longer at altitude, though a few sunny days can still melt a thin cover. It also brings more disruption risk on mountain roads and the upper Gondola, so keep a flexible day.
November is a gap month. The autumn crowd has gone home, and the winter crowd doesn't arrive until the ski season and the Christmas and New Year holidays, which in Gulmarg usually start around mid-December according to JKTDC.
What that means on the ground: quieter viewpoints, emptier gardens and roads, and more of the valley to yourself. It's also chinar season. The chinars in Srinagar's Mughal gardens turn copper, and at Verinag they go copper in November.
It's a good month for the quieter corners too. On our autumn trip we walk the Daksum forest, where you're likely the only group there, reach Aru Valley before the day visitors arrive from Srinagar, and start Gulmarg early to beat the crowd.
The trade-off: shorter days, cold nights, and the chance that some roads or places close at short notice because of snow or security. Places in Kashmir open and close on and off, so message us on +91 8867269090 to check what's open for your dates, or follow our WhatsApp channel for updates.
These are four different things:
Knowing the difference saves you from the most common November disappointment. A weather report saying "snowfall in the higher reaches" can mean white slopes above town, not deep snow outside your Srinagar hotel.
If deep snow is the whole point, plan for the main winter season instead. Our Offbeat Kashmir Winter Tour runs every week through the winter, with the deepest snow from December to February, and takes you through Bringi Valley, Daksum, Doodhpathri and Naranag instead of the usual Gulmarg and Pahalgam loop.
Make Gulmarg the priority if snow is the goal. Save your clearest weather day for it. The height difference between Gulmarg town, Kongdoori and Apharwat gives you several chances to find snow in one place.
Travel in the second half. Dates after mid-November usually give better odds than the first week. That's probability, not a promise. Snow here depends on passing weather systems, not a calendar date.
Keep one buffer day. Don't lock Gulmarg into a single fixed day. If the forecast shows snowfall, strong wind or poor visibility, moving it by 24 hours can be the difference between a white landscape and a closed upper Gondola.
Follow short-range forecasts. Check the IMD Srinagar forecast before you leave and every morning after. Long-range forecasts show a trend, but the last 48 to 72 hours are what you actually plan with.
Ask the right questions. Instead of "Is there snowfall in Kashmir?", ask:
These separate what's actually on the ground from broad promotional claims.
November can feel pleasant in direct sun and sharply cold the moment cloud, wind or evening comes in. Pack for changing conditions, not the average daytime temperature.
Ordinary sneakers get wet and slippery on melting snow. Good shoes matter more than an oversized coat.
The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two stages, but access to the upper mountain isn't guaranteed. Strong wind, poor visibility, snowfall, technical checks and safety rules can delay or stop it, especially Phase 2. JKTDC also advises visitors to carry proper winter protection, since it can be cold up there even outside midwinter.
Fresh snow can slow or stop traffic on exposed mountain routes. In November 2024, early snow temporarily closed the Srinagar to Leh highway until it was cleared, and the Mughal Road stayed shut. Check the traffic advisory on the morning you travel rather than going by the previous day.
Choose November if what you want is the chance to watch winter arrive: the first flakes, white ridgelines, quiet viewpoints and far fewer people than peak snow season.
Skip November if your trip depends on:
Kashmir in November isn't the deep-winter postcard. It's the start of the change: bare branches below, white ridgelines above, and the chance that one overnight weather system changes the whole view.
For your best shot at that first snow, come after mid-November, keep a high spot like Gulmarg in the plan, and leave one day flexible. Come for the excitement of an uncertain first snowfall, not the expectation of a guaranteed one, and November can feel quiet, raw and real. Not sure what's open for your dates?
