December is when Kashmir moves into proper winter. Nights in Srinagar drop below freezing, Gulmarg starts building its snow, and on 21 December Chillai Kalan, the 40 harshest days of the Kashmiri winter, begins and runs to 31 January. We live through this every year, so here is the honest version. December is a good month to visit Kashmir. But snow is never a promise, and enough snow to look pretty is not the same as enough snow to ski. Plan around that difference and December becomes a very easy month to enjoy.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How many days? | 6 to 7 days, with one flexible day kept free for weather. |
| Where should you go? | Srinagar and Gulmarg as the core. Add Pahalgam if you want a slower mountain stay. |
| Is December good for skiing? | Possible, but it is early season. Snow cover matters more than the date. |
| Is snowfall guaranteed? | No. Some Decembers are dry for weeks. |
| What should you book early? | Your stay and your Gondola slot, on the official portal only. |
| What should stay flexible? | Ski sessions, mountain excursions and any transfer that depends on road conditions. |
Before paying for anything that depends on snow, ask what happens to your money if the snow doesn't show up.
There is no single temperature for "Kashmir". Srinagar sits in the valley, Pahalgam is higher, and Gulmarg is higher still, so each place runs colder than the last. Use the numbers for the places you will actually sleep in.
Days are usually clear and crisp, with the sun doing real work around midday. Once it drops behind the mountains, the cold comes in fast. Plan your outdoor time for late morning to mid afternoon.
For the full picture across all twelve months, see our guide on the best time to visit Kashmir.
These are the official India Meteorological Department (IMD) long-term averages:
| Place | Average night low | Average day high | IMD reference period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar | -1.6°C | 9.9°C | 1991 to 2020 (IMD Srinagar climate data) |
| Pahalgam | -4.2°C | 7.9°C | 1991 to 2020 (IMD Pahalgam climate data) |
| Gulmarg | -4.7°C | 4.4°C | 1981 to 2010 (IMD Gulmarg climate data) |
These are averages, not a forecast. A cold spell can push Srinagar several degrees below its normal, especially once Chillai Kalan starts. A week before you fly, check the IMD Srinagar daily forecast instead of relying on a monthly table.
Early or late December? Early December is early season. Gulmarg's snow base is still forming, and there is no fixed opening date for skiing. Late December brings Chillai Kalan and the Christmas and New Year rush, but it still doesn't guarantee snow. If your dates are locked around the holidays, book a trip you would enjoy even without skiing.
Maybe. That is the honest answer. Some years Gulmarg is white by mid December. Other years the valley stays dry well into January. In early 2024, a dry spell running from December left Gulmarg's ski season struggling for weeks.
Before you book, separate three things:
If snowfall is the whole point of your trip, our month by month guide on when it snows in Kashmir will help you pick dates.
Gulmarg: snow and skiing. If skiing is part of the plan, stay at least two nights. Gulmarg has beginner learning areas near the base, ski schools, and lift access up the mountain, but how much of it runs in December depends entirely on that season's snow. The Gondola runs in two phases, with the top station at roughly 3,980 metres (J&K Cable Car Corporation on the Gulmarg Gondola). Riding to the top for the view is one thing. Skiing down from there is a completely different level, and not for beginners.
Srinagar: food, lakes and old city mornings. Srinagar is where you see everyday Kashmiri winter life. Go to a neighbourhood bakery early, have noon chai with fresh bread, and try harissa for breakfast in the old city. Harissa is a winter morning dish and shops sell out, so go early. Use Srinagar for your first and last nights and keep one day here unplanned. If the mountain is closed one day, you will want a good plan B.
Pahalgam: a quieter stay. Pahalgam suits people who want forest, the Lidder river and a slower pace rather than a ski trip. But know what's closed. A fresh closure order keeps several Anantnag spots shut until 31 December 2026, including Baisaran, Chandanwari, Tulian Lake, Daksum, Sinthan Top and Margan Top. Don't let anyone sell you a December day trip to these.
Sonamarg: possible, but confirm. The Sonamarg tunnel, inaugurated in January 2025, was built to keep Sonamarg reachable through winter. That makes a December visit possible, but check the day's road advisory and what is actually open before you build a day around it.
Doodhpathri, Yusmarg and other offbeat spots. Access to Kashmir's quieter places opens and closes through the year based on security clearance and weather. Before you plan around any of them, message us on WhatsApp at +91 8867269090 and we will tell you what is open for your dates.
December skiing in Gulmarg works if you book around real conditions, not a promised opening date. Some years have usable snow by mid December. Other years, there isn't enough cover until January. If powder and advanced skiing are the whole reason for your trip, January and February are the safer bet.
Pick terrain that matches your level:
| Area | Who it suits | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Base area beginner slopes | First timers learning to stop and turn | That lessons are running, snow cover, instructor availability |
| Kongdori and lower lift terrain | Skiers progressing with an instructor | Which lifts are open and which your lesson needs |
| Upper mountain near Apharwat | Strong, experienced skiers with a guide | Whether it is open, conditions, guide suitability |
| Backcountry and off piste | Experienced skiers with specialist guides only | Guide credentials, avalanche gear, insurance, rescue plan |
A couple of beginner lessons do not prepare you for the upper mountain. Let your instructor decide where you ski, not your Gondola ticket.
For beginners: book a proper lesson, not a vague "skiing activity". Ask what the lesson covers, how long it runs, how many people are in the group, whether equipment and a helmet are included, and what happens if snow cover isn't enough. Prices vary a lot between operators, so compare written quotes that list instruction, equipment, lift access and transport separately.
Want a proper course instead of a taster? The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM), under the Ministry of Tourism, runs 14 day courses in Gulmarg. Its 2026 to 27 schedule has a course from 20 December to 2 January with 80 seats across basic, intermediate and advanced levels. The fee is ₹10,000 for participants up to 25 and ₹20,000 for those above 25, with an age limit of 10 to 40. Booking opens on 12 November 2026 at 10 AM (IISM course schedule). A scheduled course is not proof of snow, so ask IISM about their weather policy before booking flights.
Safety: off piste skiing in Gulmarg is serious mountain terrain. Advanced trips should come with avalanche gear (transceiver, shovel and probe) and a qualified guide. Never cross a closed boundary or follow other skiers into terrain you don't know. And check that your travel insurance actually covers skiing, including off piste and evacuation. "Adventure activities included" is not the same thing.
Book only through the official J&K Cable Car Corporation ticketing portal. The corporation itself tells visitors to book online and avoid touts (J&K Cable Car Corporation).
Before paying, check which phase you are booking, the current fare, any operating notices and the cancellation terms. The Gondola, the Kongdori chairlift and the ski drag lifts are separate, so don't assume one ticket covers all of them. If you are taking a first ski lesson, ask your instructor which lift you need before buying anything extra.
This route gives Gulmarg two nights, keeps Srinagar at both ends and adds Pahalgam as an option. Treat it as a shape, not a promise of snow activities.
| Day | Daytime | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrive in Srinagar. Keep it light. | Srinagar |
| Day 2 | Drive to Gulmarg in daylight. Check conditions and get fitted for equipment if skiing. | Gulmarg |
| Day 3 | A ski lesson on open terrain, or your booked Gondola ride. | Gulmarg |
| Day 4 | A second lesson or a slow morning, then back to Srinagar without rushing. | Srinagar |
| Day 5 | Drive to Pahalgam. Stick to open areas around the town and river. | Pahalgam |
| Day 6 | Back to Srinagar for food, shopping or the old city. | Srinagar |
| Day 7 | Fly out. |
Only have six days? Drop Pahalgam, not your spare day in Gulmarg. Going mainly to ski? Put the extra nights in Gulmarg.
If you would rather not plan any of this yourself, our Kashmir winter group trip runs through the season with a local guide who handles the weather calls for you.
Srinagar airport is the main gateway, and Gulmarg is reached by road through Tangmarg. Vande Bharat trains now also run to Srinagar, so check current schedules before assuming Jammu is the end of the rail line.
The Tangmarg to Gulmarg road in winter. During snow and ice, authorities make anti skid chains compulsory on this road, and past advisories have applied this to 4x4s too. An SUV is not an exemption. Ask whoever is driving you:
Follow the current order, not a driver's word that the rules "usually don't apply".
Pick a place for its heating before its view. Ask every property, in writing, about heating hours, hot water, power backup and any extra charge for a heater. Ask for recent photos of the actual room, not the property's best promo shots.
Gulmarg: stay up the mountain if you are skiing. Government run JKTDC huts are an option worth checking (JKTDC Gulmarg accommodation), along with private hotels at every budget.
Srinagar: a hotel or a houseboat both work. If you want a houseboat, ask specifically how the rooms and bathrooms are heated and what happens during a power cut.
Winter is the best season for Kashmiri food, and the best of it isn't on restaurant menus.
Want to dress like a local? Pick up a pheran in Srinagar. It is the long woollen cloak Kashmiris wear all winter, and it goes over everything.
At shrines and mosques, ask about dress, shoes and photography before going in. Agree on the price, route and duration before any pony ride or excursion starts, and ask before photographing people.
In an emergency, dial 112, India's single number for police, fire and medical help (112 India).
